A family affair: Kids at our Wedding

Weddings, to me, have always been a family affair. Over the years, the weddings I have attended (six to be exact) have always included guests' children. For a majority of these weddings (4 to be exact) I was a kid, and I enjoyed the fancy service during dinner, the huge cake, and the dancing (hello conga line!). I really liked the feeling of being part of something that adults were part of. So when we began our guest list, as my way to return the experience to our younger relatives, they have always been considered part of the wedding guest list.

This decision is due to our fun experiences at weddings as children, and the amount of kids in our respective families. Our cousins, nieces, and nephews range in age from 1 year old to 17 years old. Each has had a lovely impact in our lives and we couldn't imagine a wedding with out them.

Sure they can be loud, messy, and unpredictable. We might even have to go to some lengths to keep them entertained. But they can also be so cute, giggly, and so much fun :)

Will you have an adults only reception or will it be open to children? How did you come to this decision?

Ours was open to children, but there were only 3 there.

I would have loved to have some time to play with kids on my big day. They have such pure happiness and joy!

I totally get you on this one!

We are inviting children, there was really no question about it. We both love kids, and if they are a part of the family, then they are invited.

Yes, they might interrupt the ceremony or have hissy fits etc., but I would much rather have them there then leave them at home. We've already discussed possible kid items for the menu and I'll probably pack some goodie bags for them. I think they are more fun than putting together the favors for the adults!

i wish that we could have more children at our wedding. the only ones we're having are our niece & nephews and our late best friends 7 year old daughter who is our flower girl.

i think that kids definitely bring a real joyous air to an already festive event.

we're unable to invite more children though because our guest list was too long. We invited 180 people and the room only holds 150 so we had to cut somewhere.

I just wanted well behaved kids at the ceremony. After that--it was a free for all! :)

@Mo: kid goodie bags is such a great idea!

@THE ALTERNATIVE BRIDE: i'm glad you were able to fit kids in with such a big guest list :)

@Susan: I totally agree.

Yes! we had TONS of kids at our wedding and they made the day SO special! On top of our flower girl and boy we had each bridesmaid walk down the aisle with a little boy escort and had about 25 total kids attend the wedding. we had them in a separate room with 3 nannies so they could run around and we are now kind of super stars among the kids at our church cuz they had so much fun! They had SO much fun in the photo booth, which we anticipated, so we included wooden and foam frames and decorative details in their goody bags. :) We love these kids and I also have so many great memories from weddings growing up, so it was a no brainer!

I adore kids!! We have been going back & forth with this mainly because of the unpredictability of a child's behavior. But thanks to your post, we are now leaning towards inviting all the kids from our families. This way, my flower girl will also have other children to play with. I think it will be a real treat.

i'm a big fan of kids at weddings. all my cousins are starting to have kids and it just wouldn't be a true family event without them!

I agree with you... weddings are a celebration and I think the WHOLE family should be there! We have a LOT of little kids in our two families, and I'm looking forward to seeing them all dressed up all cute with wedding cake frosting on their faces =)
