40 Days and 40 Nights at Sullivan Goss

On a recent Sunday afternoon, Hubs and I visited Sullivan Goss-An American Gallery in downtown Santa Barbara. An open gallery and cafe, their current exhibit in the Messick & Mayhew Galleries is 40 Days & 40 Nights: The Paintings of Lockwood de Forest. The exhibit is comprised of 40 daylight paintings and 40 moonlight paintings of Santa Barbara scenery and landscape, all from over 100 years ago!

The beach scenes, ocean views, and landscape were recognizable but different. While buildings and landmarks that are present today are not present in these paintings, we were still able to identify a lot of the locations. It is a really interesting perspective, a very beautiful way to look at Santa Barbara of old. We loved staring into paintings of the familiar, yet past.

Half of the gallery housed the daylight paintings.

The wall's paint color and the lighting gave this side of the gallery a nice, bright, airy feel. I loved it.

My favorite "daylight" painting is of wildflowers, plant life, and an open field. Hope the lucky person who bought it enjoys it (and decides to gift it to me) ;)

The night side of the gallery was covered in cool gray walls and soft light. Very calming.

I'm captivated by the differences in moon light, clouds, calm tones, and views of each painting.

My favorite night painting because of the soft pink and purple tones :)

40 Days and 40 Nights runs until April 3rd, so if you are in SB, check it out!
