By now it should be no surprise that I love lyrics. Like poems and sonnets, lyrics hold so much emotion and translate feelings into words so effortlessly, they are just set to music. So in honor of Valentine's Day, which has always been one of my favorite holidays, here is a collection of excerpts of some of my favorite songs about love.
"You Soft and only You Lost and lonely You Strange as angels Dancing in the deepest oceans Twisting in the water You're just like a dream" The Cure
"I search for something To compare you to Thought long and hard For a simile true Now I'm suddenly aware In the quest you're beyond compare So speak easy" 311
"I watch you spin around in the highest heels You are the best one, of the best ones We all look like we feel You have stolen my You have stolen my heart" Dashboard Confessional
"So many moons that we have seen Stumbling back next to me I've seen right through and underneath And you make me better I've seen right through and underneath And you make me better Better... better... You're really lovely Underneath it all You want to love me Underneath it all I'm really lucky Underneath it all You're really lovely" No Doubt
"Just like a break in the clouds when the sun come shining through, Momentary glimpse of the divine sometimes when I look at you and everything just cancels out and for that moment there's no doubt Dreams of a better life can come true, it's all there in you." The Bouncing Souls!
"Come on let me hold you, touch you, feel you Always Kiss you, taste you, all night Always" Blink 182
"I've seen your face a thousand times Have all your stories memorized I've kissed your lips a million ways But I still love to have you around I've held you too many times to count I think I know you inside out And we're together most days But I still love to have you around You're the one I want and it's not just a phase You're the one I trust, our love is the real thing" Gwen Stefani
"You look so pretty sleeping next to me But there is not enough time, And there is no, no song I could sing And there is no combination of words I could say But I will still tell you one thing, We're better together" Jack Johnson
We plan to use all of these songs throughout the reception and highlight a couple in lyrics in our ceremony program. Maybe even name tables after our favorite songs :)
Years ago Blink 182 performed a choreographed dance in their boy band parody video for their single "All the Small Things". MTV's Making the Video followed them through the process and my cousin and I thought it would be funny to learn those steps. While we never learned the steps, I think it would be a great song/dance to do our first dance to. It's a cute love song, popular during our adolescence, and dance steps are very funny.
With the Grammy appearance announcement of a new Blink 182 album in the works (my inner teenage heart skipping a beat), I might be able to push this choreographed dance idea into reality. Not sure how much convincing the mister needs though (since we had decided that our first dance song would be "Stolen" by Dashboard Confessional) because if it's a lot, I may be dancing with myself.
What was your first dance song? Did you do something choreographed?
edit: my sister just read this and said, "you'll probably still end up dancing by yourself" gotta love her :) Blog title is from lyrics by Billy Idol
Upon hearing that No Doubt will be launching a tour in 2009 and possibly start recording, I had to listen to all the songs on their most recent album, "Rock Steady". I remember burning this album from a friend's (ages ago!) and playing it on repeat for months. It seemed like a lot of the songs on the album were explaining exactly how I felt at that moment about relationships. It was like Gwen was singing my thoughts before I thought them and my feelings as I felt them.
The one song that stuck out most was "Underneath It All".
It's got a laid back vibe, chock full of emotion and tenderness that will always bring me to thinking about my relationship with my love. It's like a journey through love, ultimately reaching understanding. An understanding that through everything, after what's gone on, proves that deep down your love is strong and are meant to be together. And it's articulated so beautifully. :)The video is styled so glamorously. Sparkles, bright colors, undeniable style. Wonderfully inspiring.
I always wanted this song to be played at the wedding. Had considered it as a first dance song, but now we might use it in a slide show of old photos at the reception.
How are you incorporating your favorite/meaningful songs into your wedding details?
The blogger Wedding Poop just published this post about how she and her fiance got together and what song describes their relationship. It was a great post and I totally agree that songs and lyrics can bring me back to a certain time, place, situation, memory. I thought about songs a lot today. They say so much about a period of time, say things with such emotion and feeling, and say what you want to say.
Right now I'm on a love song kick. And I am in love with "Stolen" by Dashboard Confessional. I think it eloquently states what we feel about each other and how we see our relationship right now. It's an end of summer, relaxed, love song. It's something that I could build the wedding theme around. When I listen to it I imagine the reception, the first dance, and singing this to each other while we dance.
Below is the video. Pure bliss. We are going to see Dashboard tonight at Staples Center! Woot!
